"The Sauk County Development Corporation has announced the selection of Top Hat Heating, Fireplace, and Chimney Specialists of West Baraboo and Pierce's Supermarket, Inc. also headquartered in West Baraboo, as the small and large 200067 Sauk County Businesses of the Year.

"Our 2006 winners are both family-owned business that have grown the scope of the operations into a much lager market, " said Karna Hana, executive director of the Sauk County Development Corporation.  "Each of the winning business has demonstrated the importance of Being true to your market niche while seeking new opportunities and always providing exceptional customer service."

Top Hat Heating, Fireplace and Chimney was nominated by Dave Taylor, Baraboo National Bank. Specializing in heating, coding, hearth and chimney products, Top Hat services primarily the southern half of Wisconsin. Headquartered in West Baraboo, Top Hat also has a store in Madison which opened in 2002 to better service its many Madison area customers.

The company was founded by Roy and Pam Mjelde in 1981 and incorporated in 1984. There are 34 full time employees and in 2006, sales grew to more than $4million. Sales growth has averaged 20 percent during the last five years with projected growth estimated at 10 percent during the next several years.

Top Hat partners with Bryant heating and cooling products for their HVAC business. In 2006, Top Hat received the Pinnacle Medal of Excellence from Bryant. This award places Top Hat as one of the top six dealerships in the United States and Canada out of approximately 4,000 dealerships. Top Hat has with Habitat for on several houses. have a relationship with Baraboo Youth Association, installing a boiler and furnace. Top Hat was a maior contributor to the indoor swimming pool at the middle school and during 2005 donated and installed a see-through fireplace at the new hospice center in Baraboo. They also sponsor several youth and adult sports teams including baseball, soccer, swimming and hockey. They have done more than 50 free seminars to fire around the state to help educate them on how chimney systems perform, fire safety and proper installation of hearth products.


Owners Roy and Pam Mjelde are both active members of New Life Community Advent Christian Church where Roy serves as finance chairman and Pam is in charge of foreign missions and helps out with the church's day care and youth education. Roy has spent 15 years on the Baraboo Riptide swim team board of directors and also helps referee meets. Roy has also helped coach the Baraboo Varsity soccer team and coaches Baraboo's 14-year-old boy's soccer team in the spring.
